After nearly a decade of tattooing, we've seen just about every aftercare approach — some good, some not so good. Here's what we recommend to our clients based on real experience.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Wash gently 2-3x daily with fragrance-free soap | Pick or scratch peeling skin |
| Apply thin layer of oil-based aftercare | Soak in pools, hot tubs, or baths |
| Wear loose, breathable clothing | Over-moisturize (thin layer only) |
| Pat dry with clean paper towel | Use petroleum-based products |
| Protect from sun once healed (SPF 30+) | Exercise heavily in the first few days |
The Do's
Do Keep It Clean
Wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap 2-3 times daily during the first week. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — regular towels can harbor bacteria.
Do Moisturize Regularly
Apply a thin layer of aftercare product whenever your tattoo feels dry or tight. Oil-based balms tend to last longer than water-based lotions, so you won't need to reapply as frequently.
Do Wear Loose Clothing
Tight clothing can stick to fresh tattoos and irritate the healing skin. Opt for breathable, loose-fitting fabrics over your tattooed area.
Do Listen to Your Body
Some itching and peeling is normal. If something feels off or you're concerned, reach out to your artist.
Do Protect From the Sun
Keep your healing tattoo out of direct sunlight. Once healed, use SPF 30+ sunscreen to protect your ink long-term.
The Don'ts
Don't Pick or Scratch
This is the number one mistake we see. Picking at peeling skin or scabs can pull out ink and lead to patchy spots. If it itches, gently pat or apply more moisturizer.
Don't Soak in Water
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and natural bodies of water until your tattoo is fully healed. Quick showers are fine — just don't let the water pound directly on the tattoo.
Don't Over-Moisturize
More isn't always better. Applying too much product can suffocate the skin and slow down the healing process. A thin layer is all you need.
Don't Use Petroleum-Based Products
Traditional petroleum jellies can create a barrier that traps heat and doesn't allow skin to breathe. Look for oil-based alternatives that absorb into the skin.
Don't Exercise Heavily Right Away
Excessive sweating can irritate a fresh tattoo. Take it easy for the first few days, especially if your tattoo is in an area that will stretch or sweat a lot during exercise.
Don't Wrap It for Too Long
Unless your artist specifically recommends extended wrapping (like with second-skin products), remove the initial wrap after the recommended time. Your tattoo needs to breathe.
A Simple Daily Routine
Here's what we recommend for the first two weeks:
- Morning: Wash gently, pat dry, apply thin layer of aftercare
- Midday: Reapply aftercare if feeling dry
- Evening: Wash gently, pat dry, apply thin layer of aftercare
Keep it simple and consistent. Your tattoo will thank you.
Tattoo Aftercare FAQ
Wash your tattoo gently 2-3 times daily during the first week with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel rather than a regular towel.
Avoid regular lotions, especially those with fragrances, dyes, or alcohol. Use a dedicated tattoo aftercare product or an oil-based balm that's designed to be gentle on healing skin.
Apply a thin layer of moisturizer to soothe itchy skin. Never scratch or pick at your tattoo — if it itches, gently pat the area instead. A cooling balm can also help relieve discomfort.
Light scabbing can be normal, but heavy scabbing may indicate over-moisturizing, picking, or other issues. Let any scabs fall off naturally — picking them can pull out ink and cause patchy spots.
